Copywriting 101: Why It Is the Secret Superpower You Need

I used to think ‘copywriting’ sounded like something lawyers did to protect song lyrics or intellectual property. Honestly, same? But plot twist – it turns out copywriting is the real unsung heroine behind every brand you secretly love, every product you never knew you needed, and every ‘add to cart’ moment that hit you at 2 a.m.

When I started writing publicly, I did not even know I was copywriting. I just wanted to share thoughts, connect with people, and maybe land some freelance gigs. But then I discovered that this thing, this fusion of words + strategy + persuasion – was a whole art form. And once I got it, I was hooked.

So, What is Copywriting?

At its core, copywriting is writing that sells, but not in an in-your-face, used car salesperson kind of way (lol). Think of it as story telling with a mission. It is writing that inspires action: a click, a sign-up, a purchase, a follow, or even just a second glance.

Every caption that makes you pause, every blog post that convinces you to try a new habit, every website that makes you say “wow, this feels like me” – that is copywriting at work. It is not just writing. It is writing with intention.

Why It Is the Secret Superpower You Need

Whether you are a creative, a founder, a coach, a side hustler, or someone just figuring things out- your words are currency. And if you know how to use them? You are already ten steps ahead.

Here is why copywriting is your not-so-secret weapon:

It builds trust – good copy feels like a conversation, not a pitch. It makes people feel seen. And when people feel seen, they stick around.

It sells without selling – the best copy does not yell ‘BUY NOW.’ It whispers, ‘This was made for you.’

It makes you visible- in a world overflowing with noise, clear and compelling words are how you stand out.

It connects emotionally – and emoions are what move people to act.

My Copywriting Journey (a.k.a Accidental Expertise)

I did not take a fancy course. I did not wake up with a perfect pitch template or a million-dollar client list. What I did was write. A lot. For myself. For blogs as a guest and ghost writer. For this space I was building one word at a time.

I wrote captions that resonated. Substack newsletters that felt like letters to old friends. Blog posts that slowly started attracting strangers – the good kind – the ones who DM you just to say, “This spoke to me.”

And then I realized: I was not just writing. I was copywriting.

And the more I leaned in, the more confident I became. Not just as a writer, but as a creative with something to say, something to sell, and something worth showing up for.

So… Where Do You Start?

You do not need a marketing degree or a six-figure portfolio. You just need to:

Know your people- who are you writing for? What keeps them up at night? What lights them up?

Use their language- copy that works feels familiar. Ditch the jargon. Keep it simple and conversational.

Write like human- because bots are boring and you are not.

Practice clarity over cleverness- if people are confused, the will not convert.

Tell stories, always- even in the smallest phrases. Especially there.
